A union contract, an Oscar producer, and a handbag campaign have nothing in common except the same nine days.

***This week's vertical drama news doesn't cluster around one company or trend. James Franco headlined a microdrama under SAG-AFTRA's new Verticals Agreement. DramaBox brought an Oscar-nominated Brazilian producer into its pipeline. Peacock turned microdrama's structure into a mobile game, and Marc Jacobs released its second fashion microdrama. A Latino media network, an India ad-effectiveness report, and a creator-owned studio all launched in the same seven days.***

## **Shortical: James Franco headlines first major-star microdrama under new SAG-AFTRA deal**

James Franco stars in Love, Lies & Frank, a 50-episode microdrama on Shortical and one of the first productions under SAG-AFTRA's new Verticals Agreement. Franco plays an ad-agency CEO facing criminal and supernatural threats, opposite established vertical actors Eric Guilmette and Neela Jolene. Director Eric Wang Schwager and writer Melissa Lynn Moore led the production for Knockout Shorts, which confirmed no AI-generated performances were used.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Jimmy Fallon, Kevin Hart, and Issa Rae have all moved into microdrama before him. What's different here is timing: Franco arrives with formal union labor protections already in place, not ahead of them.

> Hollywood talent used to test vertical drama quietly. Now it's showing up with a contract already negotiated.

## **DramaBox: an Oscar-pedigree producer enters Brazil as the Colombian slate expands**

DramaBox has put into production a Brazilian original starring telenovela actor Duda Reis, working with Cimarrón — the house behind Oscar-nominated Society of the Snow and Best International Feature winner I'm Still Here. Filming began in São Paulo, targeting a Q4 release. Alongside it, three Colombian originals are rolling out: Mi Barco del Amor Zarpó Sin Ti, Besando al Hermano Equivocado, and Soy la Novia de mi Peor Enemigo.

Most vertical platforms building out Latin America have leaned on telenovela stars for recognizability. Cimarrón's involvement is a different kind of credibility — actual Academy Award pedigree behind the camera, not just a familiar face in front of it.

> DramaBox has downloaded 460 million times. This week it added a producer whose last film won an Oscar.

## **Peacock: the microdrama hook, rebuilt as a game**

NBCUniversal launched Public Eye on Peacock this week — an AI-generated serialized detective game from Wolf Games, the Dick Wolf-backed studio also behind Law & Order: Clue Hunter. The company's own description was blunt about the lineage: it sits, they said, "at the intersection of two trends users are excited about: microdramas and interactive storytelling." Players work episodic cases through hidden-object mechanics rather than watching video unfold.

Clue Hunter's early numbers gave NBCUniversal reason to keep going: 40% of Peacock mobile users engaged with a game in June, and players are averaging over six minutes a day. Public Eye is a bet that the same cliffhanger logic works as gameplay, not just footage.

> Netflix and Disney+ built vertical feeds. Peacock built a game out of the same habit-forming structure instead.

## **Marc Jacobs: a second fashion microdrama, with bigger names attached**

Marc Jacobs released The Swap this week, the second chapter of its Question Marc series, starring Rowan Blanchard and Jemima Kirke with a cameo from Jeremy O. Harris. The plot — an accidental handbag swap after a runway show — plays out across the brand's YouTube channel and social platforms, timed to its fall 2026 collection. April's opener, The Scene, starred Rachel Sennott.

A single branded microdrama could be dismissed as a campaign stunt. A second chapter, with a bigger cast and a recurring title, starts to look like something closer to a content strategy the brand intends to keep running.

> Marc Jacobs isn't advertising with microdrama anymore. It's producing a series that happens to sell handbags.

## **LatiNation: a microdrama slate built for one audience**

LatiNation Media, marking its 25th anniversary, announced a partnership with Fumero Films to build a slate of vertical microdramas for English-first Latino audiences, launching in Q1 2027\. Fumero, led by Alejandro Fumero and Adriana Santos, has already produced more than 50 microdramas, including Academy of Lies, which pulled millions of views on TikTok.

BET went this route with aTwist. Canela Media built Zully as a bilingual app from scratch. LatiNation's version treats a specific audience not as a market segment to reach eventually, but as the entire premise of the slate from day one.

> The next round of microdrama growth doesn't look like more content. It looks like content nobody else bothered building.

## **India: a report puts a number on microdrama's ad power**

ShareChat, Moj, and Kantar released "The State of Microdrama in India" this week, based on a survey of 1,045 users aged 18–44 across 14 cities. Eighty percent said they prefer microdrama to other formats. Eighty-six percent watch more than 15 minutes a day. Seventy-seven percent find new titles through social feeds. On the advertising side, the numbers were sharper still: 84% brand recall and 82% purchase intent, both ahead of standard short-form video.

Most of India's microdrama coverage to date has been about growth curves and download counts. This report is aimed at a different reader — brand marketers deciding where ad budgets go next.

> India's microdrama pitch has moved from "look how many people watch this" to "look how well this sells."

[Microdrama ads record 84% brand recall in India: ReportA ShareChat-Moj report with Kantar found that 77% of viewers discover microdrama via social feeds, while 82% show purchase intent, outperforming traditional short-form content on brand metrics.![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/4e/08/4e085894-1c5a-4767-b4c4-70c385ab0d9d/content/images/icon/9JmHR45vIewjfmWPWjPM-c95a0b47-3a19-4d24-bead-003a06dc225f.png)SocialSamosaSocial Samosa![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/4e/08/4e085894-1c5a-4767-b4c4-70c385ab0d9d/content/images/thumbnail/99-2026-08-12-18-55-25-f5b6902b-edfd-4b11-97c3-8c3aa9add396.jpg)](https://www.socialsamosa.com/report/microdrama-ads-record-84-brand-recall-india-12254422?ref=real-reel.com)

## **Prema Creative Co.: a creator skips the casting call**

L.A. creator Sachin Kumar launched his own studio, Prema Creative Co., this week alongside Typecast, a 14-part vertical comedy premiering September 7 on Instagram. The series follows a fictionalized version of Kumar navigating typecasting in Hollywood. Grayson Shapiro directs — his first time behind the camera, after working as first assistant director on Obsession, which grossed more than $225 million globally.

Prema is positioned explicitly as a studio for BIPOC stories, built and owned by Kumar rather than developed inside someone else's platform. That's a different move than being cast in a microdrama someone else greenlit.

> Kumar didn't wait to get cast in a microdrama. He built the studio that gets to greenlight one.

## **LumiView: fifty authors, one bet on ownership over output**

Y+X Entertainment expanded its LumiCreator network to more than 50 bestselling authors and screenwriters ahead of LumiView's beta launch this fall. New York Times bestseller Tosca Lee is among them — her novel Demon is already in production as a vertical series shot in South Korea. Kathy Tyers' Firebird and Christy Barritt's Hidden Currents are also in the pipeline.

Most microdrama platforms compete on how fast they can release new titles. LumiView's pitch runs the other direction: fewer originals, but ones built around durable IP that authors actually retain a stake in.

> Volume has been the whole game in microdrama so far. LumiView is betting the next round gets won by whoever keeps the rights.

[Y+X Entertainment Expands LumiCreator NetworkMore than 50 authors and screenwriters have joined the LumiCreator network supporting LumiView, Y+X Entertainment Group’s upcoming vertical IP platform.
