**A+E Global Media** expanded microseries licensing, **ZEE-backed BULLET** announced a 100-title AI production plan, and **France's JLA Groupe** launched its own vertical entertainment platform. **New research from Dentsu** examined microdrama viewing habits, while **Meta's advertising role**, Vurt's television expansion and German public production funding highlighted different ways mobile-first entertainment is being produced, distributed and monetized.

## ⦿⦿

This week's announcements share a practical question: how do companies turn mobile-first storytelling into a business that can be produced, distributed and monetized repeatedly?

## **A+E brings nearly 200 television titles into microseries licensing**

**A+E Global Media** is putting nearly **200 reformatted programs** on the third-party microseries market, including ***Cold Case Files*, *Alone* and *Married at First Sight***. Lifetime is also expanding its original vertical slate, with seven productions planned by year-end and a new series scheduled for its app every two weeks.

The larger move is in rights exploitation. A+E is treating existing television libraries as assets that can generate new licensing opportunities through mobile-first distribution, alongside newly commissioned vertical content.

The opportunity is substantial for rights holders with established catalogs. But verticalization is not simply a change in aspect ratio. Whether adapted television can deliver the pacing and retention expected by mobile audiences remains an important commercial test.

> Television libraries are becoming a new source of mobile-first inventory.

## **Meta's advertising business exposes microdrama's acquisition economics**

**Business Insider** examined how microdrama platforms including **ReelShort, GammaTime, ShortMax and CandyJar** rely on **Meta** to acquire viewers. Some operators reportedly allocate as much as **75%** of their marketing budgets to Meta, while GammaTime co-founder Slava Mudryk put his company's share at approximately 55%.

The figures expose a central tension in the microdrama business model. Platforms invest in original content and direct monetization, yet a substantial share of their spending goes toward acquiring audiences through another company's advertising network.

For platforms built around paid episode unlocks, the critical question is whether revenue generated by a viewer can consistently exceed the cost of acquiring that viewer. Growing consumption does not automatically translate into growing margins.

> Microdrama's audience growth and its acquisition costs are two sides of the same business.

[The micro drama industry is booming. It’s giving Meta two wins at the same time. That very long micro drama you saw on Reels? ## **Dentsu finds microdrama viewers are staying longer than the episodes suggest**

**Dentsu's *Entertainment Spotlight 2026***, based on 8,400 consumers across 12 markets, found that one in five respondents watches microdramas. Among viewers, **62% reported sessions lasting more than an hour**, while 35% said they watch exclusively through free social platforms. DramaBox, MyDrama and ReelShort were the most commonly subscribed-to specialist services.

The findings complicate the assumption that short episodes necessarily mean short viewing sessions. Microdrama may be produced in minute-long installments, but its consumption can resemble extended serialized viewing.

That distinction matters for programming, advertising and monetization. Platforms are not simply competing for individual video plays; they are competing for sustained engagement. The figures are survey responses, however, rather than independently measured viewing data.

> Short episodes do not necessarily mean short attention.

## **ZEE-backed BULLET plans 100 AI microdramas through a seven-studio network**

India's **BULLET Microdrama**, backed by **ZEE Entertainment**, announced partnerships with seven production companies to develop **more than 100 AI-powered microdramas**. The studios will use BULLET's Trinetra AI filmmaking platform, with the first title, *Do Deewane aur Ashiqui*, reportedly completed in 10 days.

The announcement moves beyond the familiar demonstration of a single AI-generated film. BULLET is attempting to organize multiple production partners around a repeatable development and delivery system.

The 100-title slate remains a plan, not a completed output. But the operating model is worth watching: for high-volume platforms, AI's commercial value may depend less on individual generation quality than on reliable production across an entire slate.

> AI production is becoming a question of workflow, not just output.

## **Vurt takes vertical drama onto television screens**

**Vurt** is expanding beyond smartphones with **Apple TV and Android TV applications**. Co-founder Hilmon Sorey told The Verge the platform now carries more than 3,500 episodes across over 100 shows, with a reported user base of 675,000.

Unlike pay-to-unlock microdrama apps, Vurt offers complete series free with advertising and operates a 50/50 revenue-sharing model for participating content creators.

The television expansion also challenges a basic assumption about the format. Vertical storytelling may be designed around mobile viewing, but its episodic structure and narrative pace could travel across devices.

The unresolved question is economic: whether advertising revenue can support both creator payments and the cost of expanding the content library.

> Vertical storytelling may not need to stay on a vertical screen.

## **France's JLA Groupe launches its own vertical series platform**

French television producer **JLA Groupe** launched **JLA Play** on October 8, bringing more than **50 titles into a dedicated vertical entertainment service**. The offering combines new microdramas with content built around established television properties, including a continuation of *Les Mystères de l'amour*.

JLA's entry is notable because the company already controls production expertise, recognizable IP and established audience relationships. Rather than licensing everything to third-party microdrama applications, it is building its own distribution channel.

The approach tests whether traditional television producers can use existing franchises to establish a direct mobile audience, while developing new vertical originals alongside them.

> For established producers, vertical can become a distribution business, not just another production format.

## **German film funding backs a microdrama production**

**Germany's MFG Medien & Filmgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg** awarded **€127,084 in production funding to *Black Forest Royale***, a **microdrama from Freiburg-based Black Forest Studios**.

The company is developing both horizontal and vertical content and preparing its own European short-drama platform, Snäxx, scheduled for November.

The funding is more important than its relatively modest amount. European independent production relies heavily on regional funds, public financing and co-production structures. A microdrama receiving support through an established film institution suggests that vertical projects may begin accessing some of those same mechanisms.

One award does not establish an industry-wide shift, but it creates a useful precedent for European producers.

> Vertical drama is beginning to enter established film-financing structures.

## **Samsung TV Plus expands its original programming with Dhar Mann Studios**

**Samsung TV Plus** commissioned ***Unlikely Families***, a four-part scripted anthology from **Dhar Mann Studios**, following the earlier original ***Unlikely Romances***. The new series is scheduled for 2027, with Dhar Mann serving as creator, writer and executive producer.

The partnership extends a relationship that already includes a dedicated **Dhar Mann FAST channel**.

This is not a vertical drama deal, but the underlying business model is relevant. Dhar Mann built a large scripted entertainment operation through social video before expanding into commissioned streaming originals.

For creator-led studios, the path to traditional distribution increasingly begins with an established audience and a working production business rather than a conventional television development deal.

> Creator-led studios are moving from supplying audiences to supplying original programming.

## **AI-generated series *The Arc* reveals the cost of production credits**

The creators of ***The Arc***, a five-episode AI-generated science-fiction series running approximately **83 minutes**, **disclosed spending around $38,000 in AI generation credits supplied by Artlist**. The production used tools including Seedance and Kling, with filmmakers reporting an average of eight to ten generations per shot.

That $38,000 figure is not the complete production budget. Human creative work, editorial decisions and other production expenses remain outside the reported credit costs.

The case offers a more useful benchmark than claims about AI making films cheaply. It shows how costs can shift from physical production toward generation, iteration and creative supervision.

For longer AI-native projects, those variables may become increasingly important to budgeting.

> AI production changes the cost structure. It doesn't remove the cost of iteration.

## **Swiss social platform naoo prepares to integrate scripted microdramas**

**Swiss social media company naoo** announced plans to **add professionally produced microdramas and short series directly to its existing platform**. Eight titles form the initial offering, with the streaming feature already in testing and a broader rollout planned for October.

Unlike a standalone microdrama application, naoo is introducing scripted entertainment into a product already built around social interaction, content discovery and advertising.

The company is exploring additional monetization opportunities, although the service has not yet demonstrated audience demand or commercial performance.

The experiment is worth following because it takes the opposite approach from dedicated drama apps: instead of acquiring viewers for a new entertainment platform, it brings entertainment into an existing social environment.

> The next distribution opportunity may be inside platforms audiences already use.

## **Also Worth Watching**

Elsewhere this week, **iQSTEL** began approaching seven mobile operators serving approximately 93 million subscribers to explore microdrama distribution, although no completed agreements have been announced. In the Philippines, **ABS-CBN's iWant** continued expanding its vertical slate with the BL series *Coach Me Maybe*. India's **Rusk Media** outlined further international production ambitions, including opportunities in the US microdrama market.

At MIPCOM, **Dhar Mann** was also recognized with the inaugural Future of Entertainment Award from The Ankler and MIPCOM, another indication of traditional entertainment institutions paying closer attention to creator-led businesses.
