Vertical drama and mobile-first entertainment continued to expand beyond standalone apps this week, with new distribution partnerships, local production strategies, AI licensing models and commercial infrastructure emerging across Asia and Hollywood. From ReelShort's Indonesian expansion to the launch of the industry's first dedicated microdrama upfront, the week's developments point to a business becoming increasingly integrated into the wider entertainment ecosystem.

This week, vertical entertainment looked less like an app category and more like an industry with its own commercial infrastructure. COL Group, VIRTUE Asia and V47 Entertainment announced a dedicated microdrama upfront built to bring brands into projects before production. ReelShort entered Indonesia through Vidio with distribution, dubbing and local co-production. COL expanded further into Thailand with CP Group, while new data showed microdrama apps becoming one of mobile advertising’s most aggressive acquisition categories. Elsewhere, Sunny Hostin licensed her likeness for AI-generated film adaptations, and Loomi premiered a fully AI-generated Korean original headed for local distribution.

Inside Microdramas: vertical entertainment gets its own upfront

COL Group, VIRTUE Asia and V47 Entertainment announced Inside Microdramas this week, an October 27 event in Singapore billed by the organizers as the first upfront dedicated specifically to microdramas and the wider vertical entertainment economy. Rather than functioning as another industry conference, the event is designed to put brands, creators, platforms and producers together before projects are financed and produced, giving marketers a route into original IP at development stage.

The distinction matters. The organizers are deliberately separating microdrama — serialized short-form storytelling — from a larger definition of vertical entertainment that includes reality, factual, creator-led formats, interactive storytelling, commerce and branded IP. Traditional television built an upfront system around selling audiences before a season aired. Vertical is now testing whether brands can be sold something earlier still: a place inside the story before it exists.

Vertical spent years building an audience. Now it is building the room where that audience gets sold.

Vidio × ReelShort: Indonesia becomes more than a localization market

Indonesia's Vidio announced ReelShort's first formal partnership in the country on August 26. Starting September 1, hundreds of ReelShort titles will enter a dedicated Short Drama tab inside Vidio's existing subscription packages, with more than 200 titles fully dubbed into Bahasa Indonesia in the initial rollout and a wider catalogue available with subtitles.

The more important part sits beyond licensing. The companies also plan to develop local co-productions with Indonesian production houses and talent, with those series distributed on both Vidio and ReelShort. That makes this less a content-supply deal than a market-entry model: use an established local streamer for billing, discovery and audience access, then build production locally instead of relying indefinitely on imported titles.

ReelShort isn't just translating its catalogue for Indonesia. It's starting to build an Indonesian catalogue.

Microdrama apps: 1.45 billion downloads, and the highest ad density in mobile

New Mintegral data published this week puts global microseries-app downloads at 1.45 billion in the first half of 2026, up 95.5% year over year. For comparison, non-gaming apps overall grew 16.6% over the same period. FreeReels led the category with 195.8 million downloads, followed by NetShort at 98.9 million.

The more revealing number is on the other side of the funnel. Mintegral counted roughly 3 million ads across 1,887 microseries apps in H1, giving the category the highest advertising density of any app segment it measured. The growth story is real, but so is the price of generating it: microdrama remains an unusually acquisition-heavy business, even as platforms increasingly experiment with bundling, telco distribution and other ways to reduce dependence on paid installs.

Microdrama's download curve is impressive. The amount of advertising required to produce it may be the more important chart.

Microseries is the word of the moment. Everyone is getting into them: Legacy Hollywood studios are signing lengthy production deals, content creators are Microseries apps had an ad density of 1,100 in Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Asia-Pacific region, “making it the only category to achieve that level of density in three regions,” Marketing Dive reports. In North America, microseries apps had an ad density of 977 per app.

COL × CP Group: Thailand gets distribution, remakes and a production pipeline

At ContentAsia LIVE, COL Group and Thailand's CP Group announced a three-part partnership spanning distribution, localization and talent development. Beginning in September, CP's TaTang by True ID will add a branded content tab from COL's FlareFlow service. From October, the companies plan to develop Thai remakes of COL and FlareFlow titles, with AIGC-enabled production capabilities included in the workflow.

The third piece is less immediate but potentially more structural: COL and CP also intend to work with Thai academic and industry partners to develop local short-form production expertise. Alongside Vidio × ReelShort, it makes Southeast Asia's direction this week unusually clear. Global vertical companies are not entering the region through App Store acquisition alone; they are attaching themselves to existing telecom, streaming, production and talent ecosystems.

The next phase of international expansion may be less about launching another app and more about borrowing somebody else's infrastructure.

Sunny Hostin × Fountain 0: AI likeness licensing moves from warning to contract

Sunny Hostin entered an agreement with AI film and television studio Fountain 0 to develop one or more AI-generated adaptations based on her books and license her image and likeness for use in those productions. Variety described Hostin as one of the highest-profile figures yet to provide her likeness for AI-generated film and television, while Fountain 0 says Hostin will retain control over how her image is used.

The industry conversation around digital likeness has largely been framed through unauthorized replication, guild protections and performer risk. This deal moves the question into a different territory: what does an authorized AI performance actually look like as a rights product? The interesting questions now become contractual — approval, duration, derivative use, voice, revenue participation and whether likeness rights can become a repeatable asset class rather than a one-off experiment.

The likeness debate changes once the face being generated has signed the paperwork.

Loomi: a fully AI-generated Korean original heads into local distribution

Loomi Entertainment Group premiered The Nine-Tailed Fox's Revenge Marriage at ContentAsia LIVE on August 26, its first Korean-language Loomi Original. The romance-revenge-fantasy series is fully AI-generated through Imaginary, Loomi's proprietary cinematic AI platform. It will launch on the Loomi Mobile App in September and will also be distributed in South Korea through KT Studiogenie.

AI-native drama has had no shortage of demos, self-published experiments and proprietary-platform releases. The more interesting step here is regional distribution: Loomi is pairing AI production with a Korean content partner rather than treating the technology itself as the destination. We still don't know what that distribution looks like at the consumer level, or how Korean audiences will respond, but the production pipeline has moved one step closer to conventional entertainment infrastructure.

AI drama becomes more interesting when the announcement stops being about generation and starts being about distribution.

Practical Magic 2: microdrama moves inside a studio franchise campaign

Astral Tequila, the official tequila partner of Warner Bros. Pictures' Practical Magic 2, launched It's Midnight Somewhere, a five-part scripted social microdrama starring Brooks and Grace Ann Nader. The series runs across TikTok, Instagram and YouTube Shorts and connects directly to the film's “Midnight Margaritas” mythology; Astral is also integrated on screen and supporting the partnership with a multi-city experiential tour.

That combination is what makes the project more interesting than another branded short series. The microdrama is one component of a larger franchise-marketing architecture: film IP, product integration, creator talent, serialized social storytelling and physical activation all point back to the same release. Vertical storytelling isn't replacing the campaign here. It is becoming one of the campaign's narrative layers.

The branded microdrama has moved from selling a product to extending the world the product bought its way into.

Star Creatives: a legacy Philippine production label enters vertical

ABS-CBN Studios and iWant announced Half Sisters, a new comedy vertical microdrama starring Esnyr Ranollo, Bianca De Vera and Brent Manalo. The project marks Star Creatives' first venture into vertical microdrama and will premiere on iWant in September.

ABS-CBN has already experimented with vertical projects through iWant, but bringing Star Creatives into the format matters because it moves mobile-first production from a digital experiment toward an established television production label. The pattern is increasingly familiar across Asia: legacy broadcasters are not simply licensing vertical libraries anymore. Their own production units are beginning to learn the format.

Vertical gets harder to call a side experiment once the legacy drama department starts making it.

The ContentAsia Awards named Mediacorp/Threesixzero's Woke Up In The 60s In My Grandma's Apron the Gold winner for Best Microdrama Series Made in Asia, with Fuji Television's The Missing Train taking Silver and ReelShort's Twenty: Love Shuffle Bronze. Series Entertainment also opened the beta of RUN, an AI creation platform spanning games, stories and short-form video, backed by a $1 million creator support fund. Neither changes the market on its own, but both are worth watching: one shows vertical gaining more formal recognition inside Asian television infrastructure, while the other points toward the still-blurry boundary between AI-native stories, games and serialized entertainment.
